Coronavirus disease COVID-19 on March 12, 2020

Human civilization has evolved one tragedy after another throughout its history. We are in our current status following wars, xenophobia, crime, corruption and disease inflicted in large part upon ourselves by ourselves. But still we survived these vicissitudes. Today, and after several weeks the world claims to be united in the cause to contain and eradicate COVID-19. We have a communication ability with our telephones, our computers, our instant written messages using the Internet. Our ability to share collective information and knowledge with many proven systems reports to be reliable. But is it?
Some spokespersons speak without the underlying knowledge to an equally ignorant populace who  follow these dictates, while the experts remain silent. That doesn't make sense to this writer, does it to you? COVID-19 is a world wide Pandemic, whose validity was proclaimed March 11, 2020 by the World Health Organization (WHO). Only a few weeks ago the Coronavirus condition was first  diagnosed and treated in Wuhan, China. But the problem grew in places like Italy and then to other countries in the west including Europe, Canada and the USA. One spokesperson speaking with confidence made false claims that a cure and a vaccine would be ready in a month. That spokesperson was none other than the President of the United States; 'there's the rub.' Fortunately, a medical expert from the CDC was close at hand to deliver the truth that a vaccine could be 18 months away. There was no retraction by the POTUS.
That the POTUS continues to deliver monotone edicts that shall be followed no matter how seriously flawed they may be must cause serious concern for all of us. Today he cancelled all flights from Europe to the USA carrying Europeans on board. He made this proclamation to protect the safety of the American citizens. He didn't consult his counterparts in Europe before he spoke. Does he ever consult advice-laden experts before he speaks? What we do know is the Markets for all kinds of related Industries nose-dived immediately creating economic problems on top of the medical issues  that face us now. Did he listen to any advisors before he made the call?
I started this blog suggesting that civilization survives all kinds of man-made folly and otherwise. Should I be confident that we'll turn this corner as well? When will we learn to listen to the experts and carefully consider that wisdom before we allow our spokesperson to act? We need informed, intelligent and empathetic leadership now more than ever. This is war.

COVID-19 is said to originate from a Bat, not a Rhino

Shawinigan February 22 - 25, 2020

It's a lovely winter morning in Toronto and I'm booked on AC498 to Montreal at 15:30 where I'll meet Greg and drive to Shawinigan for a long weekend. He is picking me up in Montreal instead of Quebec because he's dropping David Hogg and family at the Montreal airport. The Hogg family have had a rough time in that Peter (the father) passed away recently and his wife has been in the hospital for two months. David is Greg's high school friend that has remained constant and a realty for thirty-five years now. The other two who made the group, 'Sci Guys' are Chris living in British Columbia and Meek who lives in Toronto.  I believe I'll see Ben and Sarah this weekend as well, but not Nathan, who at seventeen years is also living and schooling in Montreal. Rory McIlroy's Golf Swing In Slow Motion | 2024 Edition

I found my first set of golf clubs 65 years ago in a Pawn Shop on Church Street close to Maple Leaf Gardens in downtown Toronto. The bag, including the full set of used clubs cost just $2.00 less than my weekly pay of $28.00 for a 40 hour work week at Litho Print (my first full-time job in the printing business). I didn't notice that they were right hand club heads until I was home and ready to take a few swings in The Big Yard. Whoops. Could I get a refund for these clubs? Why? Because I batted left handed and shot hockey pucks left handed too. Now was the time to hit right handed golf clubs from the get go. With Arch, Rich, Bill, Eddie, Keith and a few others who wanted to try their hand at a rich man's game we drove out to a golf club in Pickering. Wilson Patterson was the pro at the PGC who showed us the ropes and told us about golf etiquette: just keep up the pace with the group ahead!
